MAST 2007
Installation / Performance

At the final exhibition there were several conceptual installation art pieces

“Slaves for sale” was an art piece that required the people who attended the exhibition to register and buy themselves a slave. It involved the exchange of manillas for a card with your slave’s thumbprint and name, which was later, changed to the name of their master.

“Fruit and Slaves for sale” was a thought provoking art piece. A stall of clay heads sitting side-by-side fruit and vegetables represented slaves being sold as though they were possessions.

Pupils were also interested in music that originated from the time of the slave trade. They brought in musical instruments to create a sound of their own with the slave trade as an influence.

“Slaves in chains” was a construction piece that linked pupils to one another by their hands and their feet. The restriction was a representation of that which was experienced by the slaves.
