Shadow / Sand Art

Once the sun was out, the pupils were taken to the beach for them to produce art in interaction with their surroundings. The work produced on this day was amazing and extremely diverse.

One group reacted to the driftwood on the beach and had the idea of building a boat appearing from the sand. This group then invited the rest of the pupils to be slaves by sitting in the boat.

Some were interested in the eerie shadows created on the sand and they started to construct props to enhance their poses and reflect that of the slaves.

Others used the sands to create the imprint of slaves demonstrating the slaves have no identity and therefore do not exist, the masses of slave’s heads – it represented the amount of slaves and their suffering when crammed into a boat and transported to another land, and there were many other little projects going on. It was a really successful day and it encouraged pupils to think more conceptually.
