Once upon a time………

Once upon a time there was a dog who lived in a cottage with an old lady.  The old lady spoilt the dog and they were very fond of each other.  Unfortunately one day, the old lady died and her relatives packed up all of her old possessions.  As they packed and wrapped the old lady’s possession carefully they decided they would have a rest and went out for something to eat at a near by coffee shop to wait for the rain that was approaching over the roof of the cottage to cease.

Gradually the rain turned into heavier rain, the heavier rain clouds joined forces like an army ready for war and the rain clouds turned into heav, grumbling storms.  The terrible storm grew and grew and all of a sudden the lighting struck the roof!  With the dog inside sheltering for cover, a solid piece of wood hit the dog hard.  He tried with all his might to move but did not prevail.  The storm’s wind was horrifyingly breathtaking.  The lights went out and the dog was even more scared!  The dog was lonely and sad.  The storm got more fierce and stronger.  The vase started to wobble and the dog thought if the vase fell on him he’d definitely be dead.  He thought he was going to die, so he started whining like a baby.

All of a sudden the dog heard a noise.  He looked around the room and he saw rats scurrying across the floor.  The rats wanted to eat him.  They licked their lips and patted their bellies.  A loud burp was heard.
“I will help you, if you help me!” said the dog.

“How can you help us? We have no problem except for the CAT!” squeaked the king Rat.

“I’ll fight that cat if you set me free!”

So the rat started to nibble on the wood and then the wood snapped in half and the dog managed to break free!  “Tell me about this cat then. Is he a shady fellow?” asked King Rat.

The dog answered, “He’s a mean machine with a scar on his face!... and…he is as dark as a killer whale and just as mean!”

Suddenly the cat burst in through the window.  He looked mean, all of his black hair was hunched up and his piercing midnight-blue eyes stared.  The cat leapt onto the dog’s back and they started to fight.  They fought, and they fought and they fought.  He was bleeding and bleeding and he knew he could not win.  He kept on going, because he wanted to keep his promise.  His legs and paws hurt, because the cat had scratched him.

The cat fell and hit the vase over and the woman’s ashes were in the vase.  Oh no!  The ashes were caught in the eyes of the cat.  Some remains were scattered all over the floor.  The rats started to pick up the pieces of china and throw them at the cat.  Soon after the dog was so angered by the cat that in a rage he bit the cat!  The cat screamed, “Meowwwwwwwww.”

He licked his wounds and slowly edged out of the door.
“There!”  triumphantly said the dog, “If he ever wants a re-match call me!”

The creaky gate was heard and the realisation of the relatives returning from their coffee came to them.  The rats disappeared.  The dog stood there looking glum surrounded by broken china.
The relatives shrieked, “We can’t possibly look after this dog!  He would ruin our house!  There is nothing left to do but send him to the pound at once!”

The dog looked sad in a lonely cage in a crammed dog-pound.  Two laughing children were walking up and down the aisles looking at each dog.  They stopped at one cage and stared into the old lady’s dog’s eyes.  They thought the dog was really cute!  They decided to pick him and chose a brightly-coloured, blue collar for him to wear.

Soon after all three walked on to a new house.  They walked and walked past different fields and different towns and came to a row of cottages.  Suddenly the dog began to bark and tug at his collar.
He could smell something he could remember.  The dog tugged the new owners towards the house of an old cottage.  The dog tugged them inside the house and all three stopped in their tracks staring at a cracked picture on the floor.  They picked it up and brushed off the dirt.  They exclaimed excitedly, “That’s you dog!  That used to be your owner!  You used to live here!”

The dog started to cry.

The picture showed the old lady holding the dog in the front garden.  Both looked very happy and settled.

The young boy, the new owner, suggested, “Maybe we should go home now and take you to our house.  It will be your new home with us!”

The three of them, the two children and the dog returned to where the children lived.  They took the picture with them and reframed it.  They hung the new picture by the dog’s basket beside the fireplace.
Finally he looked around his new home and he felt grrrr great!
