Artists
in Education: In Search of Excellence Arts Conference Success The National Arts Conference recently at Swansea University was a huge success with eighty participants. The aim of the conference was to celebrate the excellent work of artists who work with children in schools on a short term residency basis in Swansea and beyond. Participants felt that his was a very exciting conference. As one delegate put it: ‘The knowledge that the sustained approach in Swansea is ahead of others is inspirational’. Children and young people inspired the audience with brief presentations such as a dance production, a Welsh medium drama and a print workshop. Delegates also heard presentations from artists and teachers, as well as from a Swansea University research team which had evaluated arts residencies in Swansea schools. An inspiration behind the conference was the late Anna-Marie Taylor from the Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE), Swansea University and the opportunity was taken to present the first two annual awards in her memory to students graduating from DACE with First Class honours degrees. Anna-Marie was convinced of the powerful impact of the arts in education and established the multi-agency steering group for the conference. The
conference represented a successful partnership between Swansea
University; The City and County of Swansea Education Department;
and Swansea Institute of Higher Education and was funded in part
by The Arts Council of Wales.
