Once upon a time…..

Once upon a time, there was a young fox, who wasn’t happy.  He lived on top of a rocky mountain, and it was a nightmare.  He was always being chased up the rocky mountain.  One day the hunters were really fierce and the fox was worried.  He got to the top of the rocky mountains but he was trapped.  The fox had nowhere to go.  He could almost smell the dogs' meaty breath.  The fox could see the flaming torches of the hunters, as they climbed up the rocky mountain.

Suddenly a mysterious black figure came from behind a boulder.  It was a fox.  He was tall and had some black hair with grey flecks of fur.  “Follow me into this cave!” he yelled.  “Quick, we don’t have enough time!”
The fox heard the dogs barking as he ran into the cave.  Inside the cave he questioned the fox.  “What are you doing?  Who are you?  Why did you help me?”

“I have helped you because you are going to help me,” said the wise fox.  The wise fox was old and out of breath.  “I am too weak to get that harp myself.  You are young – please help me” he breathed.  “I want you to go to the castle and get the gold harp from the king’s castle chamber.”

“All right.  I will help you,” said the young fox.

The young fox promised to get hold of the gold harp for the wise fox.  The wise fox said, “You can get to the castle using this tunnel.”

The fox flew down the tunnel and whacked his head.  “Argh, my HEAD!” he screamed.
He had whacked his head on a rock, as he had flown out of the tunnel.  He got up and rubbed his head.  “Mmm, what's that?” asked the fox.  It was a big door at the end of the corridor.  He wondered if this was the right door.  He tried to open the door, but it was locked.  He looked through the keyhole and saw…..the golden harp.

“How am I going to get the harp out of here?” he thought to himself.

He sighed and his breath floated over to the harp.  As the notes began to play, the fox realised he had grown.  He blew on the harp again and watched, as once again he grew bigger and stronger.  The harp sounded amazing and his muscles grew and grew.  As he grew stronger, he managed to kick the door down.  He ran in and grabbed the harp.

The fox carried the harp back up the hill to where the wise fox was waiting.  He was coughing.  As the wise fox was talking, the young fox noticed his voice becoming deep and saw his front legs turn into fleshy arms.  He grew legs and the fox looked towards his face.  It grew a human nose, eyes and mouth and a long white beard.  “Thank you for your deed.  That will be all,” said the wizard.

“What do you want with the harp?  You cannot use it in an evil way,” gasped the young fox.  “Ha ha ha!” said the wizard in a deep voice.  “It is too late.  The time has come for you to die.  I am too strong to be defeated.  Try and beat me now.”  The wizard played on the harp and grew bigger.  He suddenly grabbed the young fox by the neck.  As the wizard used his magic to kill, the young fox gasped for air.  The young fox whispered, “I know something more powerful than the harp.”

The wise wizard said, “What is it? You must tell me or else I’ll kill you.”

The young fox had a sudden brainwave.  He needed to think fast or he would soon be dead.  “Let me see the harp and I will show you the most powerful thing in the castle,” said the young fox.  He was losing his breath and had to repeat himself.

“What thing?” shouted the wizard, letting go of the young fox.

The young fox breathed …… onto the harp.  As he breathed, the wizard grew bigger … and bigger … and bigger …, until he became massive.  The young fox took one final massive breath and the wizard went purple and blew up, just like a balloon.  The king ran into the room.  “You’ve saved us from an evil wizard.  How can I ever thank you?” he cried, hugging the precious harp.

“I’d like to have my freedom please.  So I never have to run away from the hunters,” begged the fox.  “I shall grant your wish,” said the king.

So the king kept the golden harp safe, and the fox roamed free for the rest of his life.
