Sculpture by the Sea / Cerflun ar lan y Mor Environmental Art Project

The project will involve school children in two parts of Wales exploring and observing different local environments and interpreting each place in a creative way. The focus will be on the four seasons, involving a visit to a natural place for local children in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. They will investigate and record natural aspects there such as wildlife, plants and views with drawings, paintings and photography. From this documentation, they will create site specific sculpture and interpretative signs for the special place, plus other types of artwork from natural materials for display in their schools and public places. Each year of the project will involve primary schools who will work with a team of artists at the chosen sites and in their schools in two parts of Wales – West Glamorgan and West Wales Counties Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. For the first year, Mumbles Local Nature Reserve in Swansea and Colby Gardens at the Amroth Reserve will be used. Primary Schools in each area, close to the reserves, will take part with a total of five artist days each – one day on reserve 'walkabout' for observation and study and four further days for development and creation (in school and/or on reserve). The project will be suitable for both Keystage 1 and 2 children. One class of up to 30 children will be able to take part in each artist session. Special needs and disabled children will be included in this project and both sites in Swanseaand in Pembrokeshire have all ability tracks and disabled access.

The Impending Storm

The sea comes in like a playful boy
wanting to find someone to play with.
There is no-one there, so he runs back home,
and then comes in again!

The sea’s wave roars like a tiger.
He shoots through the open gate
and goes back to a closed one.
Instead he slowly slithers
across the rocks to home.

The rocks are shaped like happy faces,
and smile at people playing in the sand.

The wind blows hard on the sea
like a ferocious sea-monster.
The sea tries to throw it off his back,
and the sharks swim far away.

The speedboat is fast like a cheetah.
When the tide is high he runs fast.
When it is low he goes slow,
because he’s hunting – hunting for deer.

The raft out there is like a flatfish
moving slowly to home - a lighthouse in the sea -
it’s hot and the sea glistens.

The rain comes like a tornado,
ready to destroy everything in its path.
He soaks everyone instead
and comes back laughing.

Now the sea looks like sparkly glitter,
like a jellyfish swimming around the ocean -
a sea of electric tentacles.

The sun is glistening through the sparkly sea.
It’s a big fireball ready to explode,
and it reflects like a mirror.

If I were . . .

If I were the sea I would come in if people wrecked the beach.
I‘d try my best to get them off, but if I couldn’t the first time,
I’d sadly come back and keep on trying.

If I were the rocks on the beach I would
let myself drift into the sea
so I could explore its depths.

If I were a seagull I would fly to England,
where the beaches are packed and
I could visit my Nan.

If I were the sand I would
be scared of the stamping feet
and the smell of the fish
all over my body.

If I were a rock-pool I would
evaporate myself,
so I could explore the sky.

If I were the seaweed I would be
as green and as wet as dogfish.
I’d sit down all day long in rock-pools.

If I were the blue sky I would
travel the world,
never allowing it to rain.

The Seaside

I love the tingling sea with people dancing,
and its light blue colour – the colour of my pop.
I love to swim in its warm blues and pinks and yellows,
and I love how it sparkles like diamonds – glittering, shining.

I love the way the sea slithers through the open view
and the way I see electric shocks scatter on its surface when it’s hot.

I love the lighthouse in the distance that looks like golden treasure
and the different colours of the fish beneath the water.

I love the sand, hot on my feet,
soft like a cushion, the warm stones
when they’ve been in the sun,
and the rocks when they sparkle
like salt on the sand.

I love the water-fights we have in the summer,
the sound of the waves when I close my eyes,
and the boats that float on its surface.

I love the feel of a bumpy shell.
There’s another world inside –
another world full of adventures.

West Cross

I can see boats having a ride on the sea,
and the lighthouse on a mountain, close to a park.
I see the sun shining like a golden plate,
and a family walking beneath, to a café for a read.
In the café you can eat nice food,
by the water, on a pier.
Beside this, I can see the bridge
that takes the lifeboats to the sea.

I can hear the wind whistling like an owl –
twit towoo, twit towoo,
a jet that sounds like the opening of a bottle of lager,
leaves rattling, and cars speeding past,
and footsteps and voices on the track heading to the Mumbles.
I hear a lone seagull hunting for worms in the sand.

I smell the café – it’s lovely.
The smell of food is coming from everywhere.
I smell salt from the sand – it makes me sneeze,
and I smell the burning from the factories in Port Talbot.
I smell a cold coming on.

I see Swansea in all its glory,
and all around me – the beach, the boats.
and a yellow crane that looks like a giraffe.
I see a boat shaped like an ice-cream cornet,
and across the sea, in Port Talbot,
a factory like a dinosaur.

M.A.S.T.
Making Art in the Summer Time

Making Art in the Summer Time was part of the City & County of Swansea, Skool's Out summer programme. The art workshops were held from 2nd ? 13th August 2005, at Swansea Museum. Funding from the National Galleries and Museums of Wales 'On Common Ground' project made the activity possible.

During the conceptual arts two week course the young people explored ideas communicating the docklands environment. Collecting materials and collaborating the students produced Installation Art using found objects and string, activating space, creating 'site?specific' Sculpture and Video Art.

Many thanks to Swansea Museum for hosting the project and a special thank you to the Artists who delivered the workshops and inspired the young people:

Here's what just one of our previous delegates said last year ....

"Without doubt the best event for me was the workshop "Acting for Animators"
by Ed Hooks. This was engaging, informative, thought provoking and more
relevant than I could have anticipated ... I felt that the price was very
reasonable [affordable for me as a sole trader] and that I got full value
for money."
