The Art Curriculum

The Art Curriculum for Pen Y Bryn Senior Special School is divided into three main curriculum areas. All these areas come within the general provision for certain key stages of the National Curriculum for Art and include the matters, knowledge, understanding, skills and processes to be taught to pupils in key stages 1-3 in order that the attainment target may be achieved.

The Foundation Course.

The Foundation Course has been designed to introduce Yr 7, 8 and 9 to a great variety of media and materials through a series of simple lessons which will develop creative, conceptual, cultural, visual language and last but not least manipulatory/ physical skills. Integrated cross curricula Technology projects are carried out with the Craft department and Home Studies department.

W.J.E.C. Certificate of Education Achievement Course in Art and Design.

The second part of the Art Curriculum involves Years 10, 11, and 12, in the three main modules of ceramics, printing, painting and drawing. All the pupils work is moderated by an external moderator from the W.J.E.C and they are involved in the setting up and preparing of the exhibition. The exhibition is held for a period of two or three days so that all the schools pupils and parents can view the work.

Pupils in years 13 and 14 now have a chance to take accredited GCSE exams in Art and Design.

The Social Competence Course.
OCR Manufacturing and Retail (Enterprise Project)
Pen-Y-Bryn Cottage Industry.

The third part of the Art Curriculum is the 16+ Social Competence course which is an extension of earlier skills. The emphasis is on using more work related skills for life with or without work, through the means of the OCR Manufacturing and Retail course and Young Enterprise Scheme. Manufactured resin cottages are sold to the Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans.
