Primary Democracy Scheme

The Primary Democracy Scheme is a two-year pilot project that features in six local authority areas throughout the UK including Swansea and Bridgend.
The Primary Democracy Artist residency has been co-funded by Cywaith Cymru Artworks Wales and ContinYou and supported by Clase & Caermawr Community First Partnership and Swansea Council.

The schemes objective is to develop and support the concept of inclusion and activity by young people and for them to have a voice in what affects them in school and other aspects of their lives.

Artist-In-Residence Becky Adams worked with children across three Community First designated areas. Arfryn, Blaen Y Maes, Cadle, Clase, Clwyd, Gwyrosydd and Portmead Primary Schools were directly involved, as well as the Year 10 Applied Art pupils at Daniel James Community School.

Each and every pupil involved in the project produced his or her own response to the theme of democracy through the medium of bookmaking. The books combine elements of collage, photography, drawing, handwriting, rubber stamping and stencilling. Members of the various school councils were involved in the bookmaking workshops as it was felt that this was in keeping with the democratic theme of the project. The youngest participant was just 3 years old and the work created by the Year 10 Applied Art students will form part of their GCSE coursework.
