MA VISUAL ARTS ENTERPRISE
School of Art and Design Swansea Institute

Validated by the University of Wales

Programme Description

The programme is suited to a broad range of applicants with practical experience of the visual arts from recent graduates wishing to develop their art practice skills within the context of employment to those already working in the visual arts who are looking for continuing professional development and who wish to re-skill to meet the demands of current and future employment opportunities.

It provides learning and practical experience of a range of employment opportunities
in public art, artist in residence schemes, community arts, arts in health and social care, arts in regeneration and the voluntary sector, arts management and marketing.

Modules include topics on the role of the arts in society, their provision and organisation; a comprehensive study of the visual arts and their working practices; as well as providing a thorough grounding in business support for the management of arts projects and the opportunity to work alongside professional administrators and practising artists on current arts projects taking place in the community, public and business sectors.

Students normally attend the Institute for one day per week during Part 1: for the Postgraduate Diploma when the modules of Cultural Framework Studies, Visual Arts in Action and Enterprise Studies are formally delivered, while modules in Professional Practice are carried out by students in the work place. Access to technical support and workshops across the School of Art and Design are available to support your studies.

Part 2: Master of Arts (MA) is a further year of self-directed part time study with supervision.

Postgraduate Diploma
Part 1:

Semester 1 is primarily aimed at graduates and emerging artists who wish to acquire knowledge of a range of high-level skills to allow them to successfully access opportunities as artists in the context of employment.

The programme of four modules is delivered concurrently and provides students with a cultural framework of case studies and business studies through which they will be able to contextualise their own practice and apply for projects in their own right.

Semester 2 extends the above work and aims to provide artists with the knowledge and ability to manage and administer a variety of visual arts projects.

This stage of the programme requires students to complete a further four modules of studies. These concentrate on delivering an in-depth study and advanced understanding of visual arts practices, their development, financing and management. With this knowledge students will be encouraged to be more entrepreneurial in their art practices and develop the ability to manage arts projects of a more significant and encompassing nature.

Master of Arts (MA)
Part 2:

The MA programme is based upon the production of a substantial project, which demonstrates significant creative endeavour and contribution to knowledge within the visual arts. It allows students to apply the understanding and expertise gained during the Postgraduate Diploma to their own particular field and provides an opportunity to integrate and apply their learning to a major project within the work place.

Swansea Institute is an Associated College of the University of Wales.

Application

The MA Visual Arts Enterprise programme offers considerable scope for students to pursue specific themes or directions through the various assignments and projects. Students coming for interview are required to complete a Study Proposal form that should outline any specific interests or direction they might wish to pursue while on the programme and, where possible, these may be accommodated. Where students are involved with an ongoing arts based practice or initiative there may also be the opportunity to use this experience as the basis for growing a substantial project provided it satisfies the aims and outcomes of the individual modules and assessment criteria.

Applicants will normally hold a 2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent or appropriate experience for mature candidates over 25.
